Income Tax Number

“What is an income tax number?”

An income tax number is a unique number that SARS (the South African Revenue Service) gives your business when it registers for tax.

It’s like your business’s tax ID.

You’ll use it to deal with SARS, submit tax returns, apply for compliance documents, and keep your business on the right side of the law.

“Why do I need an income tax number?”

Your income tax number is essential for:

  • Submitting business tax returns
  • Applying for a Tax Clearance Certificate
  • Registering for other taxes like VAT, PAYE, or UIF
  • Opening a business bank account
  • Keeping your company compliant with SARS

Without it, you can’t fulfil your legal tax obligations, even if your business is small or not making money yet.

“When do I get my income tax number?”

If you register a company through CIPC, your details are automatically sent to SARS, and your income tax number is issued within a few days.

If you’re a sole proprietor, you’ll need to apply directly through SARS eFiling or visit a SARS branch.

“What does an income tax number look like?”

It’s a 10-digit number, usually in this format:9XXXXXXXXX

You’ll see it on your SARS letters, notices, and eFiling profile.

“What happens if I don’t have an income tax number?”

Without an income tax number:

  • You can’t submit returns or claim refunds
  • You won’t be able to get a Tax Clearance Certificate
  • SARS may penalise you for late registration or missed filings
  • You may miss out on tenders, funding, or contracts
