Trading Name

“What is a trading name?”

A trading name is the name your business uses in public.

It’s the name your customers see on signs, websites, invoices, or marketing material.

A trading name can be different from your registered company name, but legally, your official name (the one registered with CIPC) still applies.

“What’s the difference between a trading name and a company name?”

Your registered company name is the one listed at CIPC, like: Zimbali Projects (Pty) Ltd

Your trading name is what you ACTUALLY operate as or brand yourself as, like: Zimbali Renovations.

You can think of it like a nickname for your business.

It’s easier for the public to remember and may sound more appealing than your formal company name.

“Is a trading name legally recognised?”

No, trading names are not registered with CIPC, and they don’t replace your legal company name.

This means:

  • You still need to sign contracts and submit documents using your registered name
  • Your bank accounts, tax records, and invoices must reflect your official company name (or at least mention both names)
  • You are legally responsible under your CIPC-registered entity, not the trading name

“Can you protect a trading name?”

You can’t “own” a trading name unless:

  • It’s part of your registered company name, or
  • You’ve trademarked it through CIPC’s Intellectual Property division

Here are some tips to make sure your company name gets accepted.
